Tour details
Our Hiking tour in Transylvania is a private trip for hikers with good physical training, who want to explore the most beautiful mountain trails in Transylvania. It is a private tour, intended for friends or members of the same family. The routes we will cover are of medium difficulty (around 15 kilometres per day, 500 to 1000 meters altitude gain). For every 2 days of hiking, we will have an easier day, in which we will visit tourist attractions in the area or we will rest.
You will be accompanied by an experienced mountain guide for the whole period. In most cases, the mountain guide will also be the driver. For larger groups (> 8 people), we will rent a larger minibus with a driver.
During the trip, you will need to carry a small backpack of 20-30 litres. The rest of the luggage will be stored in the minibus or in the hotel. The routes can be circular, which means that we will return at the end of the hike at the starting point. In the case of an additional driver (meaning additional cost), we can start the trip at some point and finish it in another place. Due to the weather conditions, sometimes, the itinerary can change, to avoid any risk. We can choose to hike in a different area or to do a sightseeing tour.
Seasonal availability: the hiking tour is available in any season, but some of the tracks may not be available in winter, due to the risk of avalanches. In this case, we will rethink the itinerary with other hikes where there is no such risk.
We designed the tour starting from Bucharest and ending in Sibiu, but depending on your flight deals, we can rethink the itinerary and start and finish in Brasov, Timisoara, Targu Mures or Cluj-Napoca.
The trip highlights are:
The price starts from 459 EUR/person. This price is valid for a group of 8 persons and for an average price of accommodation of a maximum of 70 EUR/night for a double room, including breakfast. Please see below the price per person, depending on the group size. The hotels or guesthouses where we will stay will be chosen together; we will give you a few options and you will have the final word regarding the accommodation. Depending on the hotels you choose and the final itinerary, the price can change, so, for a custom offer please contact us.
Why choose us
Itinerary
We will pick you up from the airport in Bucharest and start the transfer to Bucharest. Depending on your hour of arrival we can visit Parliament Palace or just have a walking tour in the historic quarter of the Romanian capital. Overnight in Bucharest.
We leave Bucharest in the morning and head to the Bucegi Mountains. Upon arrival in Sinaia, we proceed along a mountain road that takes us deep into the heart of the Bucegi Mountains.
There we will begin the first hike of our walking trip, a gentle one, designed to help participants acclimate to the mountainous terrain. While it may be a easy hike, it promises to be highly rewarding. We will follow a path leading us to the Sphinx, a rocky formation that resembles the Sphinx of Egypt, located at 2200 m altitude. Then, we will head to the Cross on Caraiman, a monument dedicated to the Romanian heroes who fell in the First World War. Along the way, a magnificent view of the Prahova Valley reveals itself to our eyes. It would also provide an excellent chance for the mountain guide who is leading the group, to assess the physical fitness of each participant. This assessment allows the guide to tailor subsequent hikes for a comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable active adventure. If we have time, we can visit Ialomitei cave, one of the most fascinating caves in Romania, located close to our hotel
Walking distance: 10 kilometres, 600 meters of altitude gain.
Overnight in Padina
Today, we’ll conquer the Omu Peak, the tallest summit in the Bucegi Mountains, towering at 2507 meters above sea level. The route to this summit traces the course of the Ialomita River valley, allowing us to witness the very source of its waters. Along the way, we’ll approach the magnificent Ialomita waterfall, where we can refill our water bottles before embarking on the final ascent to Omu Peak. Upon reaching the summit, we’ll conclude our journey by traversing a circular path, selecting one of the trails that wind along the eastern side of the Bucegi plateau.
Overnight in Padina.
Distance: 16-21 km, altitude gain: 1100 m
Today we leave the Bucegi mountains and take a break from hiking. We will spend the time visiting the exquisite Peles Castle, the cradle of the Romanian Royal family and the Bran Castle, also known as Dracula Castle. At the end of the day, we will explore the charming old town of Brasov.
Overnight in Pestera or the nearby villages.
Today we will hike on the Piatra Craiului, one of the most spectacular mountains in Romania. We will start our tour hiking through the spectacular Zarnesti gorges and then we will follow the trail leading to Curmatura chalet (1470 m). We will have a short break for lunch at the cottage, and from there we will start walking to Crapaturi Saddle (1620 m), where we will have an excellent lookout point towards the peaks around. From there we can follow the trail leading us back to the starting point, or we can do a detour to climb Piatra Mica peak at 1816 m. (The peak detour will be done with groups made of more experienced hikers, due to the degree of difficulty the climbing involves).
Overnight at our guesthouse in Pestera of the nearby villages.
Distance: 15 km, altitude gain: 1000 – 1200 m
We are leaving Pestera and heading to Fagaras Mountains. After 2 hours drive, we reach Transfagarasan road, and after an hour drive on the sinuous road, we arrive at Balea Lake. From there we start our hike of the day, starting the climbing to the main ridge of the Fagaras mountains, on our way to Vanatoarea Lui Buteanu peak. During the hike, we can enjoy magnificent views over Transfagarasan road, Balea Lake and Capra Lake or the other peaks of the Fagaras mountains. After the hike, we will head to Sibiu (1.5 hours drive) where we will spend the night.
Overnight in Sibiu
Distance: 5 km, altitude gain: 600 m
On the last day of our hiking tour of Transylvania, we will rest and dedicate the time to visit Sibiu and Corvin Castle. Or if our guests prefer another day of hiking, we can go to the Cindrel mountains.

A well planned and expertly led week with Florin Ionescu’s Romania Guided Tours Travel Agency was our perfect introduction to the country and some of its many delights. We enjoyed challenging mountain walks, gentle rural strolls, historic churches and cities, flora and fauna and a chance to meet the locals – from shepherds to shopkeepers. I can thoroughly recommend it

I thoroughly recommend Romania Guided Tours. We had a week of walking in three different ranges in the Carpathian mountains with some fascinating historical tourism included. Florin is the nicest person with a strong interest and knowledge of history as well as a great walking guide. If you want something specific in your trip (eg more or less remote mountains), ask him in advance and he will try and arrange it.
Florin proved an excellent guide – efficient, flexible and thoughtful. He was always well informed, both about Romanian culture and history and about the natural world. He made prompt adjustments when one of our group had to cancel at short notice. Despite the vagaries of the weather we had a wonderful holiday in the mountains of Transylvania
