Journey through the most traditional corner of Romania on this 6-day private tour from Cluj-Napoca to Iași – sleep in a centuries-old village in Maramureș, ride a century-old steam train through Carpathian forests, discover the world-famous painted monasteries of Bucovina, hike a breathtaking section of the Via Transilvanica, and taste the wines of Moldavia before ending in Iași, Romania’s cultural capital of the northeast.
Where old Romania is still alive: This private tour takes you through two of Romania’s most authentic and least-changed regions. In Maramureș, horse-drawn carts still outnumber cars on village roads, wooden churches still define the skyline, and home-cooked dinners are prepared by local families just as they were a century ago. In Bucovina, monastery frescoes painted five centuries ago still glow in vivid blues and greens on church walls. This is the Romania that hasn’t been smoothed out for tourists.
Why This Tour Is Special
This 6-day private tour begins in Cluj-Napoca – Transylvania’s main city with excellent international flight connections – and ends in Iași, Moldova’s cultural capital, which has daily flights to Bucharest and good connections across Europe. Along the way, the tour traces a long diagonal arc across northern Romania, crossing from Transylvania into Maramureș, over the Prislop Pass into Bucovina, and south through Moldavia.
The tour spends two nights in Breb, one of Maramureș’s most beautiful and traditional villages, and two nights in Fundu Moldovei, a quiet village in the heart of Bucovina’s painted monastery country. Both overnight stops include home-cooked dinners with local families – one of the most genuine and memorable experiences Romania can offer. The tour ends in Iași, with an optional two-day extension into the Republic of Moldova and its extraordinary wine country.
Flexible start and end points: The tour starts in Cluj-Napoca and ends in Iași, both with good international connections. We can adapt start and end points to match your flight availability anywhere in Romania.
Fully customizable itinerary: Want an extra night in Maramureș? Prefer to add more time in Bucovina? We’ll work with you to build your ideal northern Romania experience.
Enrich your tour with special experiences: Available options include the steam train experience in Maramureș (optional on Day 3), the Via Transilvanica hike in Bucovina (optional on Day 5), wine tasting at Cotnari winery (optional on Day 6), and a 2-day extension into the Republic of Moldova with visits to Chișinău and world-class wine cellars.
Home-cooked dinners included on Days 2 and 4: Two evenings are spent dining with local families in traditional guesthouses – one in Maramureș and one in Bucovina. These meals are highlights of the entire trip and a rare opportunity for genuine cultural exchange.
🚶 Activity Level: Moderate

All transfers included: Airport pickup in Cluj-Napoca, all daily transportation, and final drop-off in Iași, in a modern minivan fully licensed for tourist transport. Your experienced tour guide accompanies you throughout all 6 days.

Complete 6-Day Itinerary
Six days tracing the great arc of northern Romania – from the Baroque grandeur of Cluj-Napoca to horse-carts in Breb, from sky-touching wooden steeples to Byzantine frescoes glowing in mountain light, from steam-wreathed Carpathian valleys to the wine-scented plains of Moldavia.
🏛️ Vibrant university city, historical district, Gothic St. Michael’s Church, Museum Square
We meet you at Cluj-Napoca airport and begin the tour immediately with a guided exploration of Transylvania’s largest and most energetic city.
Guided Walking Tour of the Historical District
Overnight: Cluj-Napoca

🎨 The world’s most colourful cemetery, tallest wooden church in Romania, UNESCO church of Desești, authentic village dinner
We leave Cluj-Napoca early and drive north into Maramureș – a land that feels genuinely apart from the modern world. Three extraordinary stops mark today’s journey before arriving at our guesthouse in the village of Breb.
Morning: The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța
Midday: Peri Monastery
Afternoon: Desești Wooden Church (UNESCO)
Evening: Arrival in Breb & Home-Cooked Dinner
Driving distance: 250 km | Driving time: 3.5 hours
Overnight: Breb, Maramureș

🏡 Traditional village life, hiking between ancient hamlets, carved wooden gates, pastoral landscapes
A day dedicated to experiencing Maramureș at its own pace – on foot, through fields and lanes that connect villages unchanged for centuries. This is rare in Europe: a working traditional landscape where the 21st century has barely arrived.
Morning & Afternoon: Village Hiking in the Maramureș Countryside
Overnight: Breb, Maramureș

🚂 Optional Day 3 Experience: The Mocanița Steam Train of Vișeu de Sus
Instead of – or in addition to – the village hike, we can spend the day on the legendary Mocănița steam train. One of the last working steam trains in Europe (originally a forest railway, in operation for over 100 years), the narrow-gauge line runs deep into the Vaser Valley through the Carpathian forests. The round trip takes approximately 6 hours and passes through stunning mountain scenery inaccessible by road. A small buffet is provided at the end of the line. This is an extraordinary and rare experience – please let us know in advance if you’d like to include it.

⛪ UNESCO wooden church, dramatic mountain crossing, painted village, Moldovița Monastery, home-cooked dinner
One of the most varied and spectacular days of the tour. We leave Maramureș behind, crossing the Carpathians into Bucovina via the Prislop Pass, with extraordinary stops along the way.
Morning: Bârsana Wooden Church & Monastery (UNESCO)
Midday: The Prislop Pass
Afternoon: Ciocănești Village & Moldovița Monastery
Evening: Home-Cooked Dinner in Fundu Moldovei
Driving distance: 200 km | Driving time: 3.5 hours
Overnight: Fundu Moldovei, Bucovina

🎨 Byzantine frescoes on church walls, the famous “Voroneț blue”, Egg Museum, optional Via Transilvanica hike
The heart of Bucovina – a day among the painted monasteries that have drawn pilgrims and travellers for five centuries. These are not simply beautiful buildings; they are outdoor picture Bibles, painted when most Romanians could not read, telling the stories of the Orthodox faith in breathtaking visual detail.
Morning: Sucevița Monastery
Midday: Voroneț Monastery – The Sistine Chapel of the East
Afternoon: Egg Museum in Vama
Overnight: Fundu Moldovei, Bucovina
🥾 Optional Day 5 Experience: Via Transilvanica Hike in Bucovina
Instead of – or combined with – the afternoon Egg Museum visit, we can hike one of the most picturesque sections of the Via Transilvanica, Romania’s long-distance trail linking Bucovina to the Danube. This section passes through the rolling wooded hills of Bucovina with exceptional views of the monastery landscape. The hike is an easy 10km circuit on well-marked trails, suitable for all fitness levels. A genuinely memorable way to experience the beauty of Bucovina beyond the monastery visits.

🏰 Romania’s finest medieval fortress, optional wine tasting, Moldova’s cultural capital
Our final day moves south through Moldavia, with one of Romania’s greatest medieval fortresses, an optional stop at one of its most historic wineries, and an arrival in Iași – a city of grand universities, palaces and churches that was once the capital of the Principality of Moldavia.
Morning: Neamț Fortress
Midday (Optional): Cotnari Winery
Afternoon/Evening: Iași
Driving distance: 200 km | Driving time: 3 hours
Overnight: Iași

🍷 Chișinău, Europe’s largest wine cellars, unique post-Soviet culture
For those with additional time, we offer a 2-day extension across the border into the Republic of Moldova – one of Europe’s least-visited and most surprising countries, famous for its extraordinary wine culture and its fascinating post-Soviet character.
Day 1 of Extension: Chișinău
Day 2 of Extension: The Great Wine Cellars
Please contact us to discuss adding the Moldova extension to your tour. Additional pricing applies.

Tour Summary
This 6-day private tour from Cluj-Napoca to Iași takes you through the two regions of Romania where traditional village life has survived most completely. In Maramureș, you’ll sleep in a village that horse-drawn carts still serve better than cars, eat dinner cooked by the family whose house you’re staying in, and walk between hamlets that have looked the same for two or three hundred years. In Bucovina, you’ll stand in front of monastery frescoes that were painted nearly five centuries ago and are still glowing with colour.
What makes this tour exceptional: The two home-cooked dinners (Days 2 and 4) are not extras – they are central to the experience. The optional steam train, Via Transilvanica hike and Moldova extension give you the ability to make the tour as active or as contemplative as you prefer. And the routing – from Cluj north to Maramureș, east over the Prislop Pass into Bucovina, south through Moldavia to Iași – follows a natural geographic and cultural arc that tells a coherent story of northern Romania.
This tour is suitable for: Travelers who want genuine cultural encounters rather than sanitized tourist experiences – those who prefer a traditional guesthouse in a village to a city hotel, who find the faded beauty of working rural landscapes more compelling than polished heritage sites, and who want to leave Romania feeling they’ve understood something real about the country.
For questions, customization options, or to secure your places, please contact us. We look forward to showing you the real northern Romania.
