One of the questions I get asked most often by my guests is: Which of the two castles—Bran Castle (the so-called “Dracula Castle”) or Corvin Castle—is worth visiting, and which is better? The truth is, there’s no simple answer, and it’s almost impossible to give a definitive one.

Dracula Connection
As most people know, Dracula never actually existed. The character was created by Irish writer Bram Stoker, who published his novel Dracula in the late 19th century. Although the story is fictional, many of the places mentioned in the book are real. In Stoker’s novel, the vampire’s castle is located near the Borgo Pass, in northern Transylvania—not in the south, where Bran Castle is found.
The association between Dracula and Bran Castle only began in the 1970s, during the communist period. Authorities were looking for ways to attract more foreign tourists to Romania and realized that the Dracula myth was a powerful draw. Bran Castle was chosen for several reasons, including its proximity to Bucharest, Romania’s main transportation hub. Reaching Bran Castle from Bucharest takes about two and a half hours, while getting to Corvin Castle can mean a long drive of up to seven hours.
We don’t know for certain which castle, if any, inspired Bram Stoker. Some sources suggest he may have seen drawings of Bran Castle. However, both Bran Castle and Corvin Castle share features with the description in Dracula: perched on rocky outcrops, with a dramatic, medieval presence. Bran Castle lies closer to the mountains, positioned at the end of a mountain pass, giving it a slightly stronger resemblance to Stoker’s vision:
“The castle was built on the corner of a great rock, so that on three sides it was quite impregnable… To the west was a great valley, and then, rising far away, great jagged mountain fastnesses, rising peak on peak…”
In reality, neither castle fully matches this description, so no castle in Transylvania can be unquestionably identified as Dracula’s Castle. The connection remains symbolic rather than historical.

Horror Movie Fans
Although Bran Castle is more associated with Dracula, Corvin Castle has actually been featured in more horror films. Notable movies filmed there include Nosferatu (2025) and The Nun (year). As far as I know, no well-known horror movies were filmed at Bran Castle. Horror fans might therefore enjoy Corvin Castle more for its cinematic and eerie atmosphere.
Visiting Experience
Bran Castle (Dracula Castle) can feel overcrowded due to its small size and popularity. There’s only one main route inside, and during peak season, the castle can feel packed. I’ve even had guests skip the interior entirely, preferring photos of the exterior.
Corvin Castle, on the other hand, is the largest castle in Transylvania. Visitors can explore it at their own pace and choose multiple routes to see its corners. Crowds are rare, even in high season, making it a more relaxed experience.
Time Needed for the Visit
Plan around 1.5 hours for either castle. This depends on how many photos you take, how deeply you read information panels, and how much time you have overall. For most visitors, 90 minutes is sufficient to enjoy the highlights without rushing.
How to Get to the Castles
Bran Castle is easier to reach without a car, thanks to organized group tours and public transportation from Brașov. Corvin Castle is harder to access by public transport, though driving is simpler: highways lead close to the castle, followed by a 30-minute local drive. Day trips from Sibiu or Timișoara are available for tourists who don’t have a car and prefer to hire a guide. You can book a guided tour to Corvin Castle here: Corvin Castle Day Trip with Guide.
Parking: Both castles have multiple parking areas. In peak season, expect a 100–200 meter walk to the entrance. Avoid trying to park right next to the castle, as it can waste more time than walking a little further.
What to Expect Inside
Both castles look spectacular from the outside, perfectly matching the Gothic medieval image.
- Bran Castle: Interior well-preserved due to its royal residence period (1922–1947). Cozy and romantic atmosphere in royal apartments.
- Corvin Castle: Interior affected by 19th-century fire; renovations incomplete. Offers a more austere medieval experience.
Gift Shops, Food, and Restaurants
Bran Castle: Numerous souvenir shops; official castle shop offers better quality at higher prices. Many nearby restaurants to choose from.
Corvin Castle: Fewer souvenir shops and fast-food stalls; nearby restaurants are fewer but good quality, often serving local food.
